In response to the year-to-year GDP drop of 6.8% in the first quarter of 2020, Yan Pengcheng, head of the Department of National Economy, National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), said at the April 20 press conference that, China’s Q1 economic situation should be examined in a holistic way in the pandemic context; it is not the normal reflection of the fundamentals of Chinese economy, but a result of a serious public health emergency. It’s inevitable to pay certain price to contain the spread of the coronavirus, but life is priceless. For people’s health and safety, short-term economic pressure is a price we must pay and worth paying.
