The Self-isolation Experience of a Woman Returnee to Chengde from ROK

On February 28, 2020, the 23-year-old Zhang Shuo, a native girl of Chengde, flew to Beijing Capital International Airport from the Incheon International Airport in the Republic of Korea. She had her temperature taken, went through customs clearance and claimed her baggage… so far so good. At the gate of international arrivals, she immediately spotted her father wearing a mask from afar. Her excitement was gone and her eyes watered when she heard her father telling her resolutely to  "do not go home."   

Her father explained to her that numerous people have sacrificed a lot in the fight against the epidemic, on all fronts and in every profession, including policemen, community officials and ordinary residents like them, but in particular doctors. She couldn’t understand her father until she watched a video seeing off the Chengde medical team to aid Hubei: her parents have struggled for so long here and of course nothing matters more than epidemic control. Family reunion is reduced to nearly nothing in front of the interests of all the people in the city. Separation is only temporary; it’s for bigger and happier reunion in the future. 

As required by the community residents’ committee, Zhang Shuo and her father were taken to the Chengde Municipal Party School, a designated quarantine place for suspected cases and close contacts. There Zhang Shuo spent a safe, happy quarantine time thanks to the considerate services of the workers. And lucky for her, she was tested negative twice for the coronavirus. Zhang Shuo was the first oversees returnee to Chengde who self-isolated. The Zhang’s family might belong to only a small, special group in this all-people’s war against the epidemic, but their story is likewise worth of praises and remembrance.
