At local time March 11, the World Health Organization held a press conference in Geneva, Switzerland, where its secretary-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus declared the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic. He said, the WHO is deeply concerned about the scope, severity and inaction about the spread of the coronavirus. "Our assessment believes that COVID-19 can be characterized as a pandemic."
WHO acknowledged the strong measures taken in China, Republic of Korea, Iran and Italy which have contributed significantly to the global fight against the coronavirus. Dr. Michael Ryan, head of WHO Health Emergencies Programme, noted that China and Singapore have proved that the COVID-19 outbreak can be controlled. There are many good practices and experience in fighting COVID-19, and governments across the world should have a proper view on the prevention and control cost, introduce integrated measures and act resolutely.
