On March 24 local time, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced to postpone the Tokyo 2020 Olympics to the summer of 2021. The decision was made after consultation with the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee and Japanese authorities including the Tokyo government, and assessment of the impact of COVID-19 whose patients have been soaring in numbers worldwide recently, on the Olympics. Despite the postponement of date, the name "Tokyo 2020" will be retained.
In his previous letter to athletes worldwide, IOC President Thomas Bach said "we have made it our leading principle to safeguard the health of everyone involved, and to contribute to containing the virus."
The XXXII Olympic Summer Games was originally scheduled to take place in Tokyo from July 24 to August 9, 2020, with the participation of 11,000-strong athletes from 206 countries/regions and refugee groups. (CCTV reporters: Xue Jingmen, Li Chunyuan)
